Coconut Shell and Batik Covered Bags

These fair trade coconut bags are simply fantastic. Made from coconut shells with a zip to join them. Inside you will find a zipped inner liner to store your bits and pieces. There is a choice of a plain coconut shell or batik covered coconut shells. Being made from old coconut shells they are environmentally friendly. They are made by one particular family in Bali.

The plain shell bags are suitable for men and woman. Use these fair trade coconut bags to store your keys and change in when you are on the beach. Great for night clubs to place over your shoulder to store your mobile phone and your drink money! Dance away on the dance floor with your little bag knowing your valuables are safe.

You won't find these bags on the high street and they are sure to be a talking point.

Colours of the batik bags will vary. Sizes will vary as they are made from coconut shells, but are approximately 6-7cm high and 40cm round.

The importer recently stumbled across the family that makes these bags whilst visiting the market area of Bali. Unable to park close to the market they drove down a side road not normally frequented by tourists or visitors to the area. They parked near a small workshop and noticed some interesting items through the door. They decided to take a look and found these lovely bags and other interesting items made from coconut shells. Much to the craftsman delight they instantly purchased all his stock, which was not very much and placed a large order with him.

Normally this family would trade with a local trader who would then sell the items to tourists or other outlets. In effect the importer has cut out the middle man but provided the craftsman with a better price for the items. They provided him with an advanced payment so he can purchase the materials needed for their order and extra to provide his family with living expenses. They hope to establish a long relationship with this family.

The importer of these bags have a direct trading policy and they are a member of BAFTS. They visit the poorer regions of the world, such as; Indonesia, Nepal, Peru and the Amazon in search of quality crafts. Once found they pay a fair price, often making advanced payments to enable craftsman or artist to purchase raw materials. This direct trading policy currently provides well paid regular employment for about 200 families.
